From Edmonton…

Hey,

I’m currently in Edmonton, at a bar called the Empress Ale, warming up to watch good friends and good people ‘The Gruff’ rock a few sets of Victoria based folk tunes. A little taste of home! While I cannot recommend the bar’s house brew (though it’s $4.50, so could be appreciated for things beyond and above how it tastes), Edmonton has been lovely so far. Scorching hot weather, the kids are amazing ( I’m out here teaching a writing camp – seriously, who likes writing when they’re 15? Shouldn’t they be hanging outside 7-11? Amazing!), and I’m doing a show tomorrow at the Artery, one of my favorite venues in the city.

Otherwise, I’m hard at work right now on a one woman play to premiere during my artist residency at the Cultch. It’s about a children’s entertainer who gets unsuspectingly pregnant and the hi jinx that ensue. It has made me contemplate at great length the sacrifice and merriment and amazing wonder and delusions and emotional spectrum of the people who contemplate having children. I am awed by all that is childbirth. Good thing it won’t ever anatomically happen for me.

I have heard some great live music lately. Ford Pier destroyed my brain at the Biltmore in Vancouver recently. The Gruff will no doubt do the same tonight in Edmonton. Joel Plaskett in Surrey (holy! Amazing!). Luke Doucet and Daniel Lanois in Mariposa; Willow Rutherford in Toronto. And I’m getting pumped for Arrested Development this weekend at Komasket.

Okay, back to my crappy beer. It will probably improve if I have a few more. Stay fit and have fun,

Brendan
